In a surprising move, the Nepal government has recalled ambassadors from 11 countries, including key positions in India and the US, appointed under the Nepali Congress quota. The decision comes just three months after Prime Minister Prachanda ended his alliance with the party and aligned with K P Sharma Oli.
Despite objections from Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha, the ambassadors, including Nepal’s envoy to India Shankar Sharma, were summoned back. This decision precedes Prime Minister Prachanda’s anticipated visit to New Delhi to attend Prime Minister Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
The abrupt recall of the ambassadors, especially those with good performance, has raised eyebrows within the foreign ministry. Foreign Minister Shrestha advocated against this move, but PM Prachanda and CPN-UML Chairman Oli pushed for it, leading to the Cabinet’s approval.
The recalled ambassadors, appointed under the Nepali Congress quota, include representatives from various countries like the USA and UK. They are expected to return within three to four weeks, marking a significant diplomatic shift in Nepal’s foreign relations.
