The Federal Government has made a commitment to increase the enrollment quota in nursing institutions from 68,000 to 100,000 annually in a bid to combat the brain drain affecting the health sector. This announcement was made by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the matriculation ceremony of the National Diploma in Nursing at the College of Nursing Sciences, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.
The move comes in response to concerns raised by the Nigerian Medical Association about a potential human resources crisis in the health sector due to the high rate of migration of medical professionals abroad. The government is prioritizing the welfare of health workers and is taking decisive steps to address the issue.
Dr. Alausa emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding nursing training institutions and increasing enrollment capacity to produce more human resources for the health sector. He urged newly matriculated nursing students to focus on delivering quality healthcare to Nigerians and not to be swayed by opportunities to work overseas.
The Medical Director of NOHIL, Dr. Mustapha Alimi, praised the minister’s support in establishing the College of Nursing Sciences at the institution and called for more infrastructure to further enhance the impact on students and the health sector. The government’s efforts aim to retain health workers and ensure a sustainable healthcare system for the country.\
