The Hinzpeter Awards: Honoring Courageous Journalism

Hinzpeter Awards open for brave video journalists

From the official website for the Hinzpeter Awards.

The Hinzpeter Awards, South Korea’s first international journalism prize, celebrates the bravery and dedication of journalists worldwide. Named after Jürgen Hinzpeter, whose coverage of the Gwangju Democratization Movement in 1980 exposed Korea’s authoritarian regime to the world, the awards highlight stories that defend democracy, human rights, and peace.

The nomination process for this year’s awards is now open, with submissions accepted until July 7. Winners will be announced in September, leading up to a ceremony in Gwangju on Nov. 7. The awards offer three competitive categories—news, features, and “world at a crossroads”—each with a prize of US$10,000 and a trophy.

Last year’s winners included documentaries on Russia’s internal conflict, the war in Ukraine, and mercenary activity in the Central African Republic. The awards have garnered international recognition and support, including a congratulatory message from the German ambassador to Korea.
