CityU President: Doubling Non-local Student Intake Could Take 4-5 Years

Freddy Boey, the vice-president of City University of Hong Kong, voices concerns over the rush to increase the number of non-local undergraduates to 30,000 to develop the city as a top education hub. Boey emphasizes the need to ensure all students benefit from this expansion.

Despite the majority of non-local undergraduates being from mainland China, CityU is actively recruiting students from other regions for diversity. Boey aims to create a balance in the student population.

The university plans to increase its facilities, including a new student hostel, to accommodate the influx of students. Boey also highlights the importance of international partnerships with institutions like the University of Cambridge for academic exchange.

Boey’s focus is on enhancing the reputation and global connections of CityU while maintaining academic standards and diversity. He stresses the significance of giving students a holistic educational experience beyond traditional classroom lectures.
