In a recent interview with Estadão, General Tomás Ribeiro Paiva, Chief of the Brazilian Army, highlighted the importance of strengthening ties with China and other BRICS nations. He discussed his upcoming visit to China, focusing on areas of science, technology, and military capabilities. General Paiva expressed his desire to visit all BRICS countries, including India where he has already visited. However, due to the conflict in Ukraine, a trip to Russia has been delayed.
Despite tensions between the U.S. and China, General Paiva anticipates no issues with the visit, citing Brazil’s significant trade relations with China and a pragmatic foreign policy approach. He also discussed reactivating the Special Commission on Dead and Disappeared Persons to understand past events better.
General Paiva emphasized military ethics and the non-politicization of active-duty forces. He praised his relationships with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Defense Minister José Múcio. Additionally, he mentioned the Army’s commitment in responding to recent disasters in Rio Grande do Sul and detailed strategic interests in cooperating with China in various fields.
General Paiva also assured ongoing support for indigenous communities and discussed plans to promote women to general ranks by 2026. He reiterated the Brazilian Army’s dedication to its constitutional duties and emphasized maintaining political neutrality.
