President Surangel Whipps Jr of Palau believes that China will try to interfere in the upcoming national election due to the country’s recognition of Taiwan. Whipps supports Palau’s recognition of Taiwan as a sovereign state, making him a target for China’s influence. He expressed concerns about Chinese involvement in elections and their desire to replace him with a more favorable candidate.
Palau is one of the few remaining countries that recognize Taiwan, amidst China’s push for diplomatic relations worldwide. The rivalry between Washington and Beijing for influence in the Pacific region is evident, with China expanding its military presence. The United States is taking measures to strengthen security in the region, including discussing the deployment of Patriot missile defense systems in Palau.
President Whipps also revealed that Palau had experienced a cyberattack, which he attributed to China. During a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, both leaders emphasized the importance of maritime security cooperation between their countries.
As tensions escalate in the Pacific, Palau remains a strategic location in the geopolitical landscape, caught between the interests of major world powers.
