Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico recently survived an assassination attempt and in his first address since the incident, he blamed his opponents for fostering the “hatred” that led to the attack. Despite being shot four times, Fico appeared calm and expressed forgiveness towards his assailant.
In a video shared on Facebook, Fico accused the accused gunman of being a “messenger of evil and political hatred” instigated by the opposition in Slovakia. The alleged perpetrator, identified as 71-year-old poet Juraj Cintula, has been charged with premeditated attempted murder and is in custody.
Fico, who aims to return to work soon, used his address to defend his views and criticize political opponents and media. He warned of more potential victims if the current political climate persists.
Since returning to office in 2021, Fico has faced controversies and strained relationships with neighboring Ukraine. His past tenure was marred by corruption allegations but he remains a divisive figure in Slovak politics.
