In a speech at the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) in Berlin, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of a strong European and German defense industry in light of current geopolitical challenges. Scholz expressed the need for the continuous production of major types of weapons and ammunition, citing Russia’s attack on Ukraine as a catalyst for a new security policy reality.
Scholz announced plans to order 20 more Eurofighters in addition to the existing 38 aircraft in production, highlighting the necessity for closer cooperation among European partners to prevent redundancy. He stressed the importance of promoting interoperability between Europe’s armed forces and positioning German industry at the forefront of this initiative.
The President of the German Aerospace Industries Association, Michael Schollhorn, echoed Scholz’s sentiments, emphasizing the industry’s response to geopolitical challenges through innovation. However, Schollhorn highlighted the industry’s need for reliable defense budgets and orders to support the security of medium-sized companies and suppliers.
The ILA, featuring 600 exhibitors from 30 countries, showcases the advancements in civil aviation and defense technology aimed at meeting the demands of an evolving security landscape.
