Russia has pledged to provide Burkina Faso with additional military supplies and instructors in their fight against terrorism, as reported by Russian state media citing Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The country, currently under military rule after a recent coup, has also hosted the Wagner mercenary force. Lavrov expressed confidence in the cooperation between the two nations leading to the eradication of terrorism within Burkina Faso. This initiative is part of Russia’s broader strategy to strengthen ties with African nations, seeking new trade partners amidst Western sanctions.
Russian companies are also exploring opportunities in Sierra Leone, with Rusal in negotiations for a bauxite mining concession and Alrosa planning talks for diamond production. These moves signify Russia’s increasing involvement in African countries, raising concerns among Western governments about growing Russian influence in the region.
