Ramaphosa seeks Mbeki’s counsel on ANC election outcomes

The recent ANC election results have left the party reeling as it lost key provinces and its majority in the country. President Ramaphosa is now in talks with the NEC about forming a coalition with the DA, although there is internal opposition to the idea.

The ANC has proposed a government of national unity (GNU) as the first offer to potential coalition partners. This move is seen as a way to navigate the tricky process of forming a government and avoiding backlash from choosing between the DA, MK Party, and EFF.

During talks with the DA, the ANC presented various models for cooperation, including a “supply and confidence agreement” based on Canada’s minority government formation.

While the ANC navigates these negotiations, the Thabo Mbeki Foundation and Presidency have remained tight-lipped on the matter. The opposition within the NEC, led by Gwede Mantashe and Paul Mashatile, adds uncertainty to the process.

As the ANC seeks to solidify its position in government, the next steps in forming a coalition will be crucial for the party’s future.
