Man imprisoned for cyber harassment of Conservative MP Caroline Nokes | Politics

A 33-year-old man from Southampton, Liam McCarthy, has been sentenced to seven months in jail for sending threatening emails to female politician Caroline Nokes and threatening voicemails to Steve Smith, former head of stronger communities at Southampton city council. McCarthy pleaded guilty to harassment at a previous court hearing.

McCarthy initially reached out to Nokes regarding his concerns about support for young adults and issues with government agencies, but his emails became threatening in August 2022. He made violent threats towards Department for Work and Pensions employees and mentioned harming Nokes and other MPs.

Hill, the prosecutor, described McCarthy’s voicemails to Smith as overtly threatening, with phrases like “I will find you, I will fucking destroy you.” Despite bail conditions prohibiting contact, McCarthy continued to harass Nokes.

The court sentenced McCarthy to seven months in jail for his actions. The case highlights the severity of online harassment and threats against public figures.
