Japanese runner freezes eggs to fulfill motherhood dream as birthrate declines

Tomomi Bitoh, a Japanese champion runner, completed a grueling 170-km race in the Himalayas and immediately sought to freeze her eggs in hopes of balancing her dream of motherhood with her athletic pursuits. Japan, facing declining birthrates, is encouraging women to consider egg freezing to address its demographic challenges.

With the average number of children per Japanese woman hitting a record low, the government is offering subsidies for egg freezing. However, a recent survey showed that a significant portion of young Japanese adults are not interested in having children, pointing to broader societal issues.

Tomomi Bitoh emphasized the need for more support for families and a shift in traditional gender roles to encourage more positive attitudes towards parenthood. Addressing these challenges is crucial to reversing Japan’s declining birthrates and ensuring a stable future for the country.
