Italian Minister Challenges Macron to Fight in Ukraine

Matteo Salvini, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, has been vocal in accusing French President Emmanuel Macron of endangering Europe with his calls for Western ground troops in Ukraine. In a recent rally, Salvini challenged Macron to personally go to war in Ukraine if he so desires, emphasizing Italy’s desire for peace.

In March, Salvini and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni both supported providing military assistance to Ukraine but opposed sending NATO troops for direct support. Salvini has called Macron a “warmonger” and a danger to Europe. He also condemned the use of Western weapons to strike Russian targets, asserting Italy’s stance for peace and against a Third World War.

Salvini, known for his pro-Putin stance, has tempered his rhetoric since forming a coalition with Ukraine supporter Meloni. Italy has provided significant military aid to Ukraine and recently announced the delivery of a second air defense system. Salvini’s stance reflects Italy’s commitment to supporting Ukraine while promoting peace in the region.
