In an effort to reduce the quarantine period for cats and dogs being imported into Hong Kong, the government is considering allowing a shorter quarantine period. However, all pets must still be vaccinated and tested for rabies, according to the city’s environment chief.
Currently, pets coming from high-risk areas like mainland China, Macau, Dubai, Thailand, and Malaysia have to undergo a 120-day quarantine before entry. The environment minister mentioned that the study to reduce this quarantine period is in its final stages.
Furthermore, different quarantine requirements are in place based on the origin of the animals. While pets from certain countries are exempt from quarantine, those from higher-risk areas will still need to undergo the mandatory 120-day quarantine.
Despite strict regulations, cases of illegal importation of cats and dogs have been recorded, prompting authorities to explore alternatives to reduce such activities.
