History Lives on in Normandy Cemetery

When Americans visit France, one site they cannot miss is the American cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. With no entry fee, this solemn yet beautiful place honors those who lost their lives in the D-Day landings. Over 9,000 white marble headstones stand in perfect rows overlooking Omaha Beach, where many young soldiers perished during the war.

After World War II, the American army hastily created temporary cemeteries for the fallen soldiers. In 1947, a permanent cemetery was established in Normandy, overlooking the beach where so many lost their lives.
