Copper Theft: Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Tampering with Eskom Infrastructure
A man involved in tampering with critical Eskom infrastructure has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. The individual, along with another suspect, was arrested in February 2022 for stealing copper bars and installing copper at a Matla substation near Kriel.
Following their arrest by the South African Police Service (SAPS) with the assistance of drone surveillance, one suspect was convicted and remained in custody, while the other fled and is currently wanted by authorities.
Eskom’s acting general manager for security, Nomsa Spaumer, commended the efforts in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Copper theft continues to pose a serious threat to national infrastructure, especially with rising metal prices.
Eskom urges the public to report any information related to electricity crimes to the Eskom Crime Line to combat this ongoing issue.
