Amanda Knox back in Italian court to clear name for good

Article content

FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Amanda Knox is back in an Italian courtroom after more than 12 years to clear herself of a slander charge that remains despite her exoneration in the murder of her British roommate, Meredith Kercher.

Accused alongside her then-boyfriend, Knox’s case captivated the world with its twists and turns over eight years of legal battles. Despite the conviction of another man, doubts about Knox persist in Italy, largely due to a slander charge she faced for accusing a bar owner. Now a 36-year-old mother, Knox returns to Italy for the second time since her release in 2011, aiming to put the accusations to rest and clear her name once and for all.

Italy’s highest court overturned the slander conviction, leading to a new trial focused on human rights violations during Knox’s initial interrogation. The court ruled to disregard previous damaging statements she made under duress. Despite the outcome, Knox faces no more jail time as her previous sentence has been served.
