In an exciting development, Sohar Port has received its first shipment of biofuel, marking the start of the experimental phase for using this eco-friendly fuel in tug and barge operations. Collaborating with Svitzer, Woqod, and Hormuz Marine Company, Sohar Port aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 17% as part of Oman’s plan for carbon neutrality by 2050.

Produced locally from cooking oil, biofuel is a renewable energy source that provides an environmentally friendly alternative. This initiative supports Sohar Port and Freezone’s strategy to promote the circular economy and contribute to the economic development of Oman while preserving its natural resources.

Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of Sohar Port, highlighted the significant impact of using biofuels in reducing harmful emissions, setting a positive example for the region. The project is a result of collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology and strategic partners in Omani ports to transition to green mobility and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

With plans for 18 carbon laboratory initiatives and the establishment of a regional center for supplying vessels with clean fuel, the strategy focuses on reducing emissions, implementing electric power and smart systems, and promoting sustainable practices in the ports sector.
