Slovenian Parliament to Discuss Recognition of Palestinian State
The Slovenian parliament is set to discuss the recognition of the Palestinian state, following the government’s announcement of its decision to recognize Palestine. However, the vote has been delayed due to the opposition Slovenian Democratic Party’s call for a consultative referendum on the matter.
Prime Minister Robert Golob expressed government support for recognizing Palestine, which would align Slovenia with countries such as Ireland, Norway, and Spain. This move has generated controversy, with the SDS criticizing the decision as supporting the terrorist organization Hamas.
While a referendum may delay the process, it is unlikely to prevent the recognition of Palestine due to the ruling coalition’s majority in parliament. Nonetheless, the decision has attracted criticism from Israel, with the Foreign Minister condemning it as a reward to Hamas and a threat to Israeli interests.
The international landscape regarding Palestinian statehood continues to evolve, with more countries recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state, despite opposition from some Western nations.
