Iran’s acting foreign minister Ali Bagheri revealed on Monday that his government is engaging in negotiations with the United States through the Gulf sultanate of Oman, a historical arch-foe.
Despite the absence of diplomatic relations since Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, Bagheri emphasized the ongoing nature of negotiations.
Reports from the Financial Times in March indicated Bagheri’s involvement in indirect talks with the US in Oman earlier in 2024 amid regional tensions driven by Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip.
Visiting Lebanon, Bagheri highlighted the country’s significance as the “cradle of resistance” against Israel, given Iran’s strong support for the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Addressing concerns about Iran’s nuclear activities, Bagheri emphasized the importance of seizing the diplomatic opportunity and ensuring cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In another development, Iranian media confirmed an adviser’s death in an Israeli strike in Syria, marking an escalation in regional tensions.
