Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defense, Richard Marles, announced plans to increase the Australian Defense Force personnel to 80,000 by 2040 to address a current shortfall of 4,400 personnel. The country faces challenges in attracting and retaining military personnel due to low unemployment rates. Marles emphasized Australia’s need for a strong military presence to protect its open sea and air routes as an island nation that trades globally. While aiming for increased strength, Marles clarified that Australia does not aim to compete with superpowers like the United States or China.
Starting July, New Zealanders with Australian permanent residency can join the military, with plans to include residents from the US, Britain, and Canada by January 2025. Australia also initiated a partnership with the US and Britain for a fleet of submarines using US nuclear technology, which has led to tensions with China. Recent clashes between the Australian and Chinese militaries highlight the need for safe and professional interactions. Marles remains committed to maintaining open communication to prevent further escalations.
