After the dust settles from the latest election, political parties in South Africa are now faced with the challenge of forming a new government. The Electoral Commission of South Africa officially declared the election results, paving the way for the seventh administration to lead the country for the next five years. The top five parties in the country are the ANC, DA, MK Party, EFF, and IFP.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has expressed openness to discussions with other parties in order to form a new government. However, the MK Party, led by former president Jacob Zuma, has made it clear that it will not enter into a coalition with the ANC under Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership. On the other hand, DA leader John Steenhuisen has signaled that his party is open to forming a coalition with other parties, including the ANC, to prevent what he calls an “ANC-EFF doomsday coalition” from taking power.
