When are the Indian election results disclosed?

The seven phases of India’s general election concluded recently, marking the largest democratic exercise in history with nearly a billion eligible voters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to secure a third term as results are awaited on 4 June. The election saw a unified opposition presenting a strong challenge.

Votes in India are counted thorugh a decentralized process, with postal ballots and Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) being used. The Election Commission of India (ECI) oversees the counting process to ensure transparency.

Following the announcement of results, the winning party or coalition with a majority of seats will elect a prime minister. In the 2019 elections, PM Modi’s BJP secured a record number of seats. In the event of a “hung house,” the party with the most seats is invited to form a government.
