US anticipates Israeli acceptance of Gaza ceasefire proposal

US Proposes Three-Phase Ceasefire Deal for Gaza

The US government is optimistic that Israel will agree to a three-phase ceasefire deal in Gaza if Hamas also accepts, according to White House national security spokesman John Kirby. President Joe Biden presented the proposal as originating from West Jerusalem and expects Israel to say yes if Hamas agrees.

The first phase of the plan involves a six-week pause in fighting, followed by negotiations for phase two, which includes an Israeli withdrawal from populated areas and the exchange of hostages. Phase three includes the return of remaining hostages and a major reconstruction effort in Gaza.

While Israel insists on the destruction of Hamas’ military capabilities before a permanent ceasefire, some coalition partners threaten to quit if a deal is reached. The US reassures Israel that Hamas has been significantly weakened and is not capable of major attacks.

As the conflict in Gaza continues, casualties mount, with 36,439 Palestinians killed and 82,627 wounded. The US urges both sides to consider the ceasefire proposal for the sake of peace and stability in the region.
