Travellers stranded at Lagos Airport due to Labour strike in Nigeria

Travellers have been left stranded as all entry points to the domestic terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport are blocked due to a strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress. This has led to the suspension of all flight operations, leaving passengers unable to access the airport.

The strike was declared over a proposed new minimum wage, with organised labour demanding N494,000 while the government is offering N60,000. The government warns that meeting the N494,000 demand could destabilize the economy and jeopardize the welfare of over 200 million Nigerians.

Efforts to avert the strike failed as a meeting between the National Assembly and labour unions ended in a deadlock. TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo stated that the strike would commence as planned, as consultation with union members is necessary before calling it off.
