Poland Restores Buffer Zone Along Belarus Border

Poland is set to reintroduce a buffer zone along its border with Belarus, announced Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz. The buffer zone will be implemented starting Tuesday, restricting citizens from approaching closer than 200 meters.

Earlier incidents, including an illegal migrant stabbing a Polish serviceman, led to the decision to reintroduce the buffer zone, with additional troops being deployed near the border. In 2021, a surge of migrants at the Poland-Belarus border caused tensions, with Poland blaming Minsk for the crisis while Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko accused Poland of exacerbating the situation.

In a bid to address security concerns and manage migrant flows, Poland had implemented a buffer zone previously, which was removed after parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Donald Tusk has now unveiled plans for massive fortifications on the border with Belarus as part of efforts to enhance European security.
