After 17 years of failed attempts by successive administrations to build an airport in Ogun State, the current government is on the verge of completing the Ogun Agro-Cargo Airport. Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, highlighted the potential economic benefits and growth opportunities the airport will bring to the state and the country upon completion in December 2023.
The airport, boasting the longest runway in Nigeria at 4km, has faced challenges from earlier proposed projects, including disputes between former governors Gbenga Daniel and Senator Ibikunle Amosun. Despite these setbacks, Governor Dapo Abiodun pushed forward with the construction, emphasizing the economic potential of the agro-cargo airport.
Aviation experts have raised concerns about the airport’s viability, citing low cargo volumes and proximity to existing airports. However, Abiodun’s administration remains optimistic about the airport’s role in enhancing agriculture and boosting the state’s economy. With promises of imminent operations, the Ogun Agro-Cargo Airport stands poised to make a significant impact on the region’s development.
