New York City is set to see major improvements in public restroom availability, as Mayor Eric Adams announced plans to build 46 new facilities and renovate 36 existing ones in city parks over the next five years. Additionally, a new Google Maps layer has been developed to help people easily locate public restrooms operated by government agencies and civic institutions.
Adams launched the initiative, called “Ur in Luck,” to address the long-standing issue of limited public restrooms in a city where many residents and tourists rely on foot and subway transportation. The lack of facilities has been especially challenging for parents, seniors, and individuals with medical needs.
New Yorker Teddy Siegel, who created a popular online map of public bathrooms in the city, welcomed the news, emphasizing the importance of accessible restrooms for all New Yorkers. The mayor also highlighted improvements to be made in existing facilities, including increased accessibility and energy efficiency features.
In total, 28 new or renovated restrooms will be in Manhattan, 23 in Brooklyn, 14 in Queens, 10 in the Bronx, and seven on Staten Island. The Google Maps layer will provide updated information on public restroom locations biannually, and data will also be available on Open Data. The recent installation of baby changing tables in city park restrooms further demonstrates the city’s commitment to enhancing public spaces.
