India Battles Heatwave and Cyclone: 56 Lives Lost
India has been hit hard by extreme weather conditions in recent months, with nearly 25,000 suspected cases of heat stroke and 56 fatalities reported. The month of May saw temperatures soar to 50 degrees Celsius in Delhi and Rajasthan, while other regions were impacted by cyclone Remal.
The toll of natural disasters also extended to neighboring countries, with Sri Lanka recording 15 deaths due to flooding and landslides. Experts attribute these events to the worsening effects of climate change.
Tragically, 33 individuals, including election officials, succumbed to heatstroke in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Odisha during India’s general election. The National Centre of Disease Control data revealed a spike in heat-related deaths in May, prompting concerns about the overall toll across the country.
Despite the grim situation, there is some relief in sight as the weather office predicts milder heat conditions and an early monsoon arrival in Kerala, offering hope for those affected by the heatwave.
