India Elections 2024: Controversy Surrounding EVMs

Unlocking the Mysteries of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in Indian Elections

The use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) in Indian elections has generated widespread criticism and controversy. Despite being in use for the fifth consecutive general election, doubts about the veracity of EVMs persist. Critics accuse the Modi government of manipulating EVMs for political gain, tarnishing the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) reputation for impartiality.

While ECI continues to defend the use of EVMs, other countries like Germany have abandoned them in favor of paper ballots due to concerns about technology reliance and susceptibility to manipulation. In response, ECI introduced the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) to address these issues.

However, the introduction of VVPATs has raised more questions than answers. Concerns about hacking, discrepancies in manual counting, and safe storage of machines have fueled further skepticism. Despite attempts to allay fears through real-time updates, the distrust surrounding EVMs persists.

What was once a BJP-led critique of EVMs has now turned into staunch support under Modi’s leadership. The refusal to revert to paper ballots only adds to the transparency debate surrounding Indian elections.
