In a controversial incident in Bareilly, five members of a gurdwara management committee were booked for displaying posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a leader of the Khalistan movement, and other separatists in two Sikh shrines. The posters also featured Khalistani separatists Amrik Singh and General Subeg Singh.
Following a complaint, the posters were removed from Model Town and Janakpuri gurdwaras with police intervention. An FIR was lodged against the five committee members for their involvement in displaying the posters.
President Malik Singh Kalra explained that the posters were put up to commemorate the ‘Balidan Diwas’ of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots as directed by the Akal Takht Sahib. Despite police objections, all posters were taken down.
Kalra emphasized that for the Sikh community, Bhindranwale, Amrik Singh, and General Subeg Singh are considered martyrs, despite the government’s stance. These individuals lost their lives during Operation Bluestar at the Golden Temple in June 1984.
