MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — In a surprising turn of events, prosecutors have announced they will dismiss murder and manslaughter charges against a white Minnesota state trooper who fatally shot Ricky Cobb II, a Black motorist, during a traffic stop. The decision comes after the trooper’s attorney provided new evidence, including testimony that Cobb was believed to be reaching for a firearm.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty filed a notice to dismiss the charges following revelations from Trooper Ryan Londregan’s defense team during a recent court hearing. The evidence suggested that Londregan’s actions were deemed an authorized use of force by a peace officer, making it difficult for prosecutors to proceed with the case.
Attorney Chris Madel, representing Londregan, expressed relief at the decision, while Bakari Sellers, representing Cobb’s family, expressed disappointment. Cobb, 33, was shot by Londregan as he attempted to drive away from the traffic stop. Prosecutors reviewed video footage and found that Cobb had a gun in the vehicle, though there was no evidence he intended to reach for it.
Despite calls for the case to be transferred to the Attorney General, Moriarty plans to hold a news conference to explain her decision in more detail. The family of Ricky Cobb II has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit in response to the incident.
