President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives recently announced a ban on all Israeli citizens entering the country as a show of solidarity with Palestine in light of Israel’s war on Gaza. This decision comes as part of a national fundraising campaign called “Maldivians in Solidarity with Palestine”.
The Maldives, known for its luxurious tourist hotspots and stunning natural beauty, had previously lifted a ban on Israeli tourists but restored it due to political tensions in 2012. The ban follows pressure from opposition parties and government allies in the Maldives.
In response to the ban, the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Israeli citizens to avoid traveling to the Maldives and to consider leaving if already in the country due to potential difficulties in receiving assistance.
The Gaza war, triggered by Hamas’s attack on Israel, has resulted in numerous casualties on both sides. Israel’s retaliatory offensive has caused significant loss of life in Gaza, with the conflict continuing to escalate.
