Every year, on May 25, Africa celebrates Africa Day to mark the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963. In 2002, the African Union replaced the OAU in name and structure but has failed to address the modern challenges facing the continent.
The AU remains stagnant and ineffective, unable to deal with issues such as poverty, genocidal conflicts, and political instability. With ongoing crises in Sudan, Congo, Somalia, Nigeria, and other African regions, the need for action and accountability is paramount.
This Africa Day, let us focus on practical solutions to combat violence, corruption, and economic downturn. Instead of dwelling on past ideologies and colonial rhetoric, let us rally for change and reinvigorate a new vision for Africa.
It is time to hold governments accountable, address societal prejudices, and ignite a sense of urgency for positive change. Let’s use Africa Day as a platform to reshape and reinvent the future of Africa.
