Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah of the Supreme Court emphasized the need for coexistence and tolerance in Pakistani society, highlighting the country’s low ranking in terms of religious freedom. Speaking at the Justice A.R. Cornelius Conference, Justice Shah called for greater representation of minority communities in higher judiciary positions, stating that they are an integral part of the nation.
Referring to the Freedom House Report, Justice Shah expressed disappointment in Pakistan’s ranking at the bottom of the religious freedom segment, urging the nation to collectively work towards improving this situation. He emphasized the protection of minority rights as enshrined in the Constitution, drawing parallels with the teachings of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).
Justice Shah praised the judiciary’s efforts to safeguard minority rights and stressed the importance of fostering tolerance in society. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar echoed these sentiments, assuring the government’s commitment to upholding the fundamental rights of minorities and promoting their representation in decision-making processes.
He announced the formation of a commission dedicated to minority issues and highlighted ongoing efforts to prevent child marriages through legislation.
The conference attendees underscored the legacy of Justice Cornelius and former Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani’s contributions to human rights and minority protection in Pakistan.
