NGT approves Mangaluru Smart City development plan

The National Green Tribunal Halts Mangaluru Smart City Project

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has temporarily stopped the work carried out by Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) to transform a coastal area into a riverfront promenade. This decision comes after complaints that the project violates coastal regulation zone rules and negatively impacts the livelihoods of hundreds of fishermen.

The Bench of Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Satyagopal Korlapati issued a stay on the project, warning MSCL to halt work until the next hearing. They also cautioned that any structures built in violation would be removed, and costs would be imposed.

Following media reports and a letter by the National Environment Care Federation, the NGT took up the case in March. The tribunal addressed concerns raised by fishnet producers and boatyard owners and employees, who were being asked to vacate the area for the promenade’s construction.

The tribunal has set up a joint committee, including the director of the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR), to investigate the matter. The southern zone bench expressed disappointment over the state government’s lack of response to the tribunal’s orders.

The joint committee has a deadline of June 24 to submit a report, and the case is scheduled for July 3. The NGT emphasizes the seriousness of following coastal regulations to protect the environment and livelihoods.
