A former New Jersey police officer, Jovanny Crespo, has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for the shooting death of one man and the wounding of another during a high-speed car chase in Newark 5 1/2 years ago. Superior Court Judge Michael Ravin handed down the sentence, emphasizing the need to deter officers from a “shoot-first, ask-questions-later” mentality.
Former officer Crespo received 20 years for aggravated manslaughter and seven years for aggravated assault, with the sentences to run consecutively. In addition, he was given six-year terms for official misconduct to run concurrently. Crespo will not be eligible for parole for nearly 23 years.
During the trial, Crespo’s family wept as the judge delivered the sentence. The defendant apologized to the victims’ families, while his defense attorney argued for leniency, citing his lack of experience and poor training. However, prosecutors stated that Crespo had been extensively trained and knew the proper use of deadly force.
This case underscores the importance of following guidelines in law enforcement and the consequences of abuse of power.
