Akpabio, Abass meet with Labor in emergency talks

With the looming threat of an indefinite strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its affiliates beginning on June 3, 2024, the National Assembly, under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, is currently holding emergency talks with labour leaders and government ministers to prevent the strike.

Labour representatives are seeking a “survival wage” rather than a “starvation wage” for workers, while Akpabio warns of potential job losses as a result of the strike. The National Assembly recognizes the implications of the strike on the economy and populace, and is working towards a resolution to the deadlock on the new minimum wage and electricity tariff hikes.

The Senate and House spokespersons emphasize the importance of constructive dialogue between all parties involved to find a viable solution. The National Assembly is committed to representing the interests of both labour and the government, and is proactive in mediating the situation to prevent the impending industrial action.
