Air Canada pilots union and parties are at odds in talks

Air Canada pilots are seeking federal assistance in their contract negotiations with the airline, as announced by their union on Sunday. Despite a year of talks and six months of mediation, the two sides have not reached a deal.

“Unfortunately, Air Canada continues to undervalue your contributions to the success of this airline,” said Charlene Hudy, head of the union’s Air Canada contingent, in a video message. While some agreements have been reached, a significant gap still exists, leading pilots to leave the voluntary process on June 15.

The union plans to file a notice of dispute to request the appointment of a conciliator by the federal Minister of Labour. Air Canada stated its commitment to a fair agreement, noting progress made in talks.

Canadian pilots are aiming for gains similar to their U.S. counterparts, who secured significant pay hikes last year. The wage gap has been labeled as “unacceptable” by the union. The Canada Labour Code outlines the negotiation process and potential strike possibilities.
