Ahmadinejad Adds Fuel to Heated Iran Presidential Race – Politics Update

Former Iranian President Ahmadinejad has thrown his hat back into the political ring by submitting his application for the upcoming presidential election. His presence at the Interior Ministry headquarters in Tehran attracted a flurry of media attention, with photographers and journalists eager to capture his return to the political scene.

Ahmadinejad, who previously served two terms as president from 2005 to 2013, delivered a speech during his registration as a candidate for the 14th round of Iran’s presidential election, which began on May 30 and will continue until June 3. Despite around 80 individuals applying for candidacy, fewer than 20, including one woman, have met the eligibility criteria.

The final list of candidates will be announced by the Constitutional Council on June 11, launching the official campaign period from June 12-26. The nationwide election is scheduled for June 28, with the new administration set to take over in late June or early July for a four-year term, following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of President Ebrahim Raisi and several other officials.
