Tin Oo, a key figure in Myanmar’s political history and co-founder of the National League for Democracy with Aung San Suu Kyi, has passed away at 97. He played a crucial role in the party’s formation in 1988 after a failed revolt against military rule. Tin Oo served as vice-chairman and chairman, enduring years of house arrest and imprisonment alongside Aung San Suu Kyi.
Despite his military background as the fourth commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Tin Oo transitioned into a prominent political figure advocating for democracy in Myanmar. He actively participated in public rallies and campaigned with Aung San Suu Kyi, culminating in the party’s landslide victory in the 2015 election.
Following the military’s ousting of Aung San Suu Kyi’s government in 2021, Tin Oo remained out of custody, reflecting his unique political journey. His passing marks the end of an era for Myanmar’s democracy movement.
