This momentum, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), set the stage for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, aiming to disrupt the TMC-BJP binary that dominated the state’s politics.
As the final phase of polling concluded, all eyes were on nine critical Lok Sabha constituencies in South Bengal where the Left, in alliance with the Congress, hoped to make inroads against the TMC’s stronghold.
Battle in the TMC Strongholds
Among the key battlegrounds was the Kolkata South constituency, traditionally held by the TMC. The Left, fielding Saira Shah Halim, looked to capitalize on anti-incumbency sentiments fueled by corruption allegations, presenting a new face for change.
In Jadavpur and Dum Dum, the Left sought to leverage anti-incumbency and address people’s concerns against the TMC, banking on fresh faces and strategic campaigning.
