The UK’s Labour opposition unveiled a bold clean energy policy aimed at addressing the country’s cost-of-living crisis and setting itself apart from the ruling Conservatives as the general election approaches. Labour leader Keir Starmer announced plans for a publicly owned company, Great British Energy, to drive funding for green energy projects in Scotland, with a focus on reducing household energy bills, creating jobs, and moving towards net zero emissions.
Starmer emphasized the economic benefits of renewables, highlighting the potential for lower bills and job creation. The policy drew criticism from Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who called it “incoherent” and questioned its ability to deliver energy security.
The upcoming election is expected to favor Labour, with polls showing Tory struggles. Starmer defended Labour’s stance on oil and gas drilling, promising new job opportunities in the transition to renewable energy.
The party plans to invest in wind, solar, and emerging technologies in Scotland, positioning the country as a leader in clean energy. Starmer also emphasized the support from former chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance for Labour’s energy plan.
