Iran’s Impact on Armenia’s Foreign Policy Expansion

Iran’s Impact on Armenia’s Foreign Policy Expansion

Armenia is facing new security threats amidst a changing regional and global order. To address these challenges, Armenia must focus on enhancing its economic and small state power potential. Iran plays a crucial role in Armenia’s communications, economic development, energy security, and overall security.

Due to blockades by Turkey and Azerbaijan, Armenia has historically relied on Georgia and Iran for connections to the outside world. Iran’s key position as a transit route to Armenia makes it vital for the country’s economic activities. Furthermore, Iran’s role in energy supply diversification and military-technical cooperation is significant for Armenia’s security.

In the aftermath of the 2020 war, Iran emerges as a potential strategic partner for Armenia to counterbalance the military pressures from Azerbaijan and Turkey. Both countries share mutual interests in maintaining stability along their borders.

The growing cooperation between Armenia and Iran does not necessarily threaten Western relations, as Armenia can navigate diverse partnerships smoothly. In the pursuit of diversification and security, Iran stands out as a valuable ally for Armenia’s future development.
