Dutch MPs Call for Investigation into Israeli Spying on ICC Lawyers
Local Dutch lawmakers are demanding a thorough investigation into reports that Israel has been spying on and intimidating lawyers at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. An investigation conducted by The Guardian, +972, and Local Call revealed that Israel used its intelligence agencies to disrupt investigations into alleged war crimes in the Gaza Strip by hacking, pressuring, and allegedly threatening senior ICC staff.
The liberal-progressive D66 and the Green-Labour alliance MPs are urging the Dutch government to provide more information on these actions and conduct an independent investigation. Member of the House of Representatives, Kati Piri, has submitted written questions calling for accountability and condemning Israel’s actions.
The investigation found that Israeli intelligence intercepted communications of ICC officials, including the chief prosecutor Karim Khan and his predecessor, Fatou Bensouda. Former Mossad chief Yossi Cohen allegedly pressured Bensouda to halt a war crimes investigation.
The Dutch government is being urged to ensure the independence of the ICC and address complaints of intimidation and espionage attempts by Israel. The ICC has recently ordered Israel to cease its offensive in Rafah, following accusations of genocide by South Africa.
