One of Canada’s most notorious serial killers, Robert Pickton, has passed away at the age of 74 after being assaulted in prison. Pickton, who brought female victims to his pig farm near Vancouver in the late 1990s and early 2000s, was serving a life sentence for the murders of six women, with the remains or DNA of 33 women found on his farm. His case made international headlines and shocked the world.
The Correctional Service of Canada confirmed his death, stating that Pickton died in hospital from injuries sustained in an assault by another inmate. The attacker, a 51-year-old inmate, is currently in custody. Pickton’s crimes involved the disappearance of dozens of women from Vancouver’s streets, many of whom were sex workers or drug addicts.
Despite the devastating impact on the victims’ families and communities, some, like Cynthia Cardinal, found solace in the news of Pickton’s attack, calling it “karma.” The correctional service is now investigating the incident to determine if policies and protocols were followed.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, emphasizing the severity of Pickton’s crimes. At the time of his sentencing, the court deemed Pickton’s case as deserving of the maximum parole ineligibility period.
