Exciting Elections Ahead: What You Need to Know
Mark your calendars for Friday 7 June- a day packed with elections in Ireland! On this day, voters will cast their ballots for the European Parliament Elections, Local Elections, and the first directly elected Mayor of Limerick.
The European Parliament Elections will see 14 MEPs chosen to represent Ireland, with each constituency having a unique set of candidates. In addition, 949 seats are up for grabs in the local councils, with over 2,100 candidates in the running.
Did you know that you do not have to be an Irish or European citizen to vote in the local elections? As long as you are a resident of Ireland and registered to vote in your local area, you have the right to vote.
With the excitement building up, it’s important to ensure your vote counts. An Coimisiún Toghcháin is urging voters to vote properly, after over 100,000 spoiled or invalid votes in the previous elections.
Counting will begin on Saturday morning, with local elections taking priority. As for the European election counts, expect some nail-biting waits as votes are tallied.
The Limerick mayoral count will begin on Monday 10 June, with 15 candidates vying for one seat. Stay tuned for updates on this historic election!
