2024 South Africa Elections: Day 3 Live Results by the Numbers | Elections News

The ruling ANC is set to lose its majority in South Africa as election results show the need for coalition partners.

With 99 percent of votes counted, the ANC has just over 40 percent of the national vote, signaling a potential shift in the country’s political landscape post-apartheid.

Following the ANC, the Democratic Alliance (DA) ranks second, followed by the MK party and EFF.

The top 10 parties and their standings are displayed in the latest updates released by the Electoral Commission (IEC).

Results by province

The ANC leads in seven out of nine provinces, securing over 50 percent of votes in five provinces like Limpopo, the Eastern Cape, North West, Free State, and Mpumalanga. While not reaching the majority in Gauteng and the Northern Cape, the ANC may need coalition partners to govern.

The opposition DA is expected to maintain governance in the Western Cape, while former President Jacob Zuma’s MK party takes the lead in KwaZulu-Natal.

What if no party receives a majority?

If the ANC fails to secure a majority, a coalition government will need to be formed with other parties to surpass the 50 percent mark.

Which are the main parties in the race?
