As election results started trickling in on Thursday morning, it was apparent former president Jacob Zuma’s party was the one to beat.

On the first day of counting, there were dejected faces at the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s (IEC) results operating centre (ROC) in Durban.

While some parties were disappointed, Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MKP) delegates appeared confident and upbeat.

In a surprising turn of events, the MK Party was leading in KwaZulu-Natal, posing a significant challenge to the ANC, EFF, IFP, and DA.

Despite the unexpected results, the MK Party remained resolute and uninterested in coalition talks, particularly with the ANC.

The outcome of the elections in KwaZulu-Natal has shifted the political landscape, leaving parties like the DA and EFF reevaluating their strategies.

Overall, the initial results indicate a significant shift in power dynamics within the province, setting the stage for potential changes in government leadership.
