The U.S. Ambassador to Lebanon, Lisa Johnson, recently attended the graduation ceremony at the American University of Beirut (AUB) where 76 scholars, recipients of U.S. government scholarships through USAID, were celebrated. These bright students, seen as future leaders in Lebanon’s public and private sectors, were able to pursue higher education amidst the country’s economic crisis, thanks to these scholarships.
The partnership between the U.S. Embassy and AUB aims to empower Lebanese youth through the USAID Higher Education Scholarship program. Ambassador Johnson emphasized the importance of education in personal and national development, highlighting the impact of the program on the students’ lives. AUB President Fadlo Khuri praised the scholarship program for promoting intellectual excellence without economic elitism.
Since 2010, the U.S. has invested over $100 million in providing full undergraduate scholarships to students from all Lebanese districts. Additionally, USAID has allocated $19.5 million in 2022 to support AUB’s financial aid program for students affected by the economic crisis. Recipients are required to engage in community service and training to navigate Lebanon’s challenges effectively.
